The heart, they say is the core and the life-giving appendage within us. Our heart tirelessly pumps vital elements throughout every vein and artery inside our body. Alongside the life it brings, our heart gives us the energy we need to go through everything the day throws at us. In addition, when one speaks of the heart, emotions such as love and affection would come into mind. Thus, the heart gives us the life, the energy, and the emotions that shape our very being.
In a time where uncertainty and trepidation overwhelmed our nation, it is very fortunate that someone with the qualities of the heart have risen and guided the lost people of the Philippines. She gave the Philippines the life it nearly lost. She gave the Filipinos the energy to fight for their rights. And she brought back the Filipinos’ emotions of love and concern for their motherland. Truly, such qualities are present in every way within “Corazon”, the heart of the Philippines.
Pres. Corazon “Cory” C. Aquino made history when she became the first Woman President of the Philippines. She became known as the Mother of Philippine democracy when she led the successful and peaceful battle against the 20 year dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos. This battle will forever be etched in our history as the 1986 People’s Power Revolution or “The Bloodless Revolution of 1986”, so moving that it was imitated by China and Germany in 1989. Cory’s courage and her will for the Philippines’ freedom radiated not only to be absorbed by every Filipino, but to be witnessed by the whole world as well.
She continued to make history when she was hailed the Woman of the Year in 1986 by the TIME Magazine, becoming the first Asian to achieve such an award. She was also listed in TIME magazine as one of 60 Asian Heroes in 2006, and extolled anew in a special report of TIME as “The Woman who changed Asia.” in August 2009. She also made Philippine history when she addressed a speech before the joint session of the United States Congress just 7 months after she assumed president of a proud and free people.
Now that her book of life has shut, the beat of her heart will never cease as all of us become more and more aware of her positive contributions towards our country. As she had said, her duty as the Philippine President may end, but her duty as the citizen of the Philippines, she will continue to carry out until her last breath.
Godspeed President Cory!
